Will Funk For Food: A Fistful of Funk

Will Funk For Food presents at Kanneltalo Finland's first locking street dance work A Fistful of Funk. The performance combines street dance, absurd theatre and live music and is performed in English.

In the work, five lonely cowboys embark on an epic journey across the desert. 1970s funk dance meets playwright Juho Keräs's text, inspired by the toxic machismo and hypermasculinity of Sergio Leone's westerns. The performance explores friendship, gender roles and masculinity through play, humour and street dance.

Locking is a dance style that emerged in the 1970s on the US west coast and is characterized by sharp stops, grooving steps and acrobatic tricks. It serves as the red thread of the work, from which connections are woven to the world of dance theatre and clownery. Central is the character element of locking - the dancer's distinctive personality - and the western genre is used as a springboard for conversations about friendship and brotherhood as well as for the battles typical of street dance culture.

On stage perform Akim Bakhtaoui, Wilhelm Blomberg, Jeffrey Kam, Teemu Kullberg and Sami Pajari. Live music is provided by sound designer-musician Sebastian Kurtén and drummer Elias Ojutkangas. Performance language: English. Duration: 75 minutes.
