UMO Helsinki Ensemble - Jimmy Giuffre 3 - Lunch Concert

UMO's woodwind specialist Max Zenger conducts his quartet, which interprets music from the Jimmy Giuffre 3 ensemble's album of the same name, released in 1957. Zenger himself plays baritone saxophone and clarinet in Giuffre's role; guitarist Rene Willman takes on Jim Hall's part, and bassist Filemon von Numers performs Ralph Peña's lines. Drummer Mikko Hassinen has adapted the drum part for Giuffre's music, transforming the original trio into a quartet.

Giuffre's compositions move along the boundary between jazz, blues, and American folk music. The music is almost entirely through-composed and features harmonic and melodic solutions that diverge from the conventions of its era.
