Author Visit: Jussi Niinistö

Dr. Jussi Niinistö, a philosopher, visits Tölö-Seura rf's author evening on Thursday, 15.10.2026 and discusses his works Grey Devils and Vienan veritie. The evening is hosted by Tölö-Seura's chairman, journalist Matti Niiranen.

Grey Devils examines Finnish volunteers who fought in Estonia's War of Independence in 1918-1920. Overshadowed by the Sons of the North was the I Finnish Free Corps, which the Bolsheviks called the "grey devils" - this vanguard unit became a decisive factor in the war's critical moments. The book contains extensive illustrations, some previously unpublished contemporary images.

Vienan veritie tells the story of a volunteer corps expedition led by cavalry captain Toivo Kuisma to Vienan Karelia in spring 1918. The group attempted to establish a Greater Finnish mini-state in the region's villages, but the Karelians responded with guerrilla warfare and, with English support, drove the Finns back across the border by autumn. Kuisma himself fell during the Aunus expedition in 1919. This work also features extensive illustrations.
