Mysterio Buffo

Italian Nobel laureate Dario Fo wrote Mysterio Buffo drawing on the tradition of medieval wandering comedians - a series of physical monologues in which ordinary people stand up to power and authority. The performance features four of Fo's stories: The Wedding at Cana, The Birth of the Juggler, The Resurrection of Lazarus, and Boniface VIII. Populism, corruption, and the ties between religion and economics feel surprisingly relevant across the centuries.

The work was first seen at KOM-teatteri in 1982, and Erkki Saarela performed it for over four decades. Now Saarela moves to the director's role, and actor Pyry Äikää takes the stage, moving between characters and using his voice with versatility.
