Oliver Beer - Resonance Project: The Cave

Oliver Beer's video opera unfolds in prehistoric caves in southwestern France, home to some of the world's oldest rock paintings. The work emerged when Beer brought eight singers into these caves and taught them to harness their natural acoustics - the space amplifies sound many times over. Each singer performs their earliest childhood musical memories: lullabies, traditional melodies, and voodoo music. Beer wove these songs into a shared polyphonic whole.

Performers include Rufus Wainwright, Woodkid, eee gee, Mélissa Laveaux, Hamed Sinno, Jean Christophe Brizard, Mo'Ju, and Michiko Takahashi.

The installation comprises 16 audio channels and eight video projections. The exhibition also features Beer's paintings, in which pigment has been moved across canvas using sound vibrations.
