Exploring Mätäjoki and Trout Spawning

The excursion begins in Pitäjänmäki, at Strömberg Park, where you will discover the renovated park with its waterfalls and fish passages. In autumn 2025, a winding fish passage over a hundred metres long was completed beside a three-metre-high waterfall, allowing trout to migrate as juveniles to the sea and later return upstream to spawn.

From the park, we continue along the river towards Tali golf course. Along the way there are several trout spawning grounds where you have good opportunities to observe fish during spawning. Tali's riverside meadows are home to species including goshawk and tawny owl.

Mätäjoki flows from Kaivokselä in Vantaa through Malminkartano, Kannelmäki, Pitäjänmäki and Tali to Iso-Huopalahti. For eighteen years, the Helsinki Fly Fishing Association and the Running Waters Conservation Association have restored the river ecosystem through volunteer work to create a spawning habitat for the endangered trout. The excursion is led by the project manager of the Mätäjoki project and water conservation officer of the Helsinki Fly Fishing Association, Pekka Lindblad.

Free entry, registration required. The excursion is not accessible to all. Dress according to the weather - a good torch can be useful.
