Kuopion kaupunginorkesteri (Kuopio Symphony Orchestra) is a municipal symphony orchestra of 46 musicians based in Kuopio, Finland, tracing its roots to 1909 when the Kuopio Music Lovers' Association founded a 23-member ensemble. Since 1976 it has operated as a city-funded institution, performing mainly at the 1,064-seat Kuopio Music Centre Concert Hall and drawing around 40,000 listeners a year. The orchestra plays across the full symphonic spectrum - from chamber-scale programmes to large-scale premieres - and has toured internationally in Sweden, Denmark, Austria, Japan and China.
Estonian conductor Risto Joost was appointed as the orchestra's new chief conductor, starting from the autumn 2027 season.
Doctor of Music Anu Lampela was appointed as the new director of Kuopio Music Centre and Kuopio Symphony Orchestra, taking up the role in early 2026.
Kolja Blacher and Eugene Tzigane became the orchestra's joint First Conductors from August 2025, with Atso Almila continuing as Second Conductor.
Kuopio Music Centre reported a record 93,163 visitors in 2025, up from 85,593 in 2024.
The orchestra opened its autumn 2025 season with special programmes marking Kuopio's 250th anniversary, including free concerts and Finnish premieres.
