W.A.S.P. is an American heavy metal band founded in Los Angeles in 1982 by vocalist and guitarist Blackie Lawless. The group made its name in the 1980s with a deliberately provocative stage show - raw meat thrown into the crowd, a torture rack, Lawless in a saw-blade codpiece - and a string of hard-rocking singles that drew the ire of the US Senate's PMRC censorship hearings. Over four decades and more than 15 studio albums, the band has evolved from shock-rock provocateurs into one of heavy metal's most enduring live acts.
