Japanese Upcycling Craft: Let's Make a Shimanto Newspaper Bag!

A free drop-in workshop at Oodi's pop-up space on Wednesday 24 June, 13:00-15:00. Open to everyone, from children to adults. Each bag takes about 20 minutes to make, and all materials are provided.

The Shimanto Newspaper Bag (Shimanto Shinbun Bag) originated as an environmental initiative to protect the Shimanto River in Kochi, Japan. The bags are made using only old newspapers and natural starch glue - the creative challenge lies in choosing how to use the photos and layouts on each page, so every bag turns out different. An instructor programme launched in 2009 now has more than 1,000 certified instructors active around the world.

"Ori-Ori," a group of certified Shimanto Newspaper Bag instructors, is travelling to Finland to host this workshop.
