Anastasia the Musical

"Calling from afar, I still feel its warmth. Fading away, the heart remembers everything."

Year 1917. The Russian Empire collapses, the Romanov family is executed - but a legend of the escaped Grand Duchess Anastasia lingers on the streets. Ten years later, Anja, who has lost her past, meets the petty criminal Dimitri and the former socialite Vlad. Anastasia's grandmother, the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna, has promised a large reward for her granddaughter - so Dimitri and Vlad convince Anja that she is the Grand Duchess, and an eventful journey to Paris begins. But Anastasia's fate is also discussed in the leadership of the Soviet Union.

The musical is based on Twentieth Century Fox's beloved animated film. It is written by Terrence McNally, with music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. The Finnish version is by Reita Lounatvuori and Hanna Kaila, who have also translated the musical's quotations in this text. On stage is an ensemble of 25 people and an orchestra of ten musicians.

The Kulissin version is directed by Pyry Keto (Heathers 2024, Rölli and the Forest Spirit 2023). The conductor is Helmi Jonasson and vocal direction is by Siina Mäkikoivu - the pair already collaborated last summer on the musical Tytöt 1918. The choreography is by dancers Anne Joutsimäki and Johanna Lampinen.

Anastasia had its Finnish premiere at Tampere Theatre in 2022 and is now seen on the Kulissin stage at Laajavuori Summer Theatre in July-August 2026. The auditorium is covered. Recommended age 10 years, duration approximately 120 minutes.
