Workshop: Let's Make a Shimanto Newspaper Bag!
Keskustakirjasto Oodi, Helsinki
Join an English-language workshop in Oodi's popup space on Thursday, June 25 from 10:00 to 12:00. The workshop is open to everyone - children and adults alike - and participation is free, with all materials included.
Shimanto Newspaper Bag is a Japanese upcycling craft born from an environmental protection initiative in Kochi Prefecture, Japan, to preserve the Shimanto River. The bag is made entirely from old newspapers and natural starch-based glue. Each bag is unique, as the maker decides how to use the newspaper's images and layout. Creating one bag takes about 20 minutes.
Since the instructor training programme launched in 2009, over 1,000 instructors have been trained worldwide. This workshop is led by "Ori-Ori", a group of certified Shimanto Newspaper Bag instructors who are coming to Finland specifically for this event.
