La Doriclea: Inter-Acts

La Doriclea: Inter-Acts is a new co-production by the Baroque orchestra Ensemble Nyland, where two timelines intersect: in a 17th-century opera, two warring soldiers fall in love with each other, and in the 21st century, a group of queer artists struggle for survival in a dystopian America. Music and dance weave the worlds together as the warrior Doriclea meets her modern counterpart.

The work combines early music, opera, theatre and dance, exploring stories of shifting identities both in the present day and through myths and operatic archetypes. The music features excerpts from F. Cavalli's La Doriclea opera (1645), which caused a scandal in its time and was partially censored, as well as works by Byrd, Meder and Marazzoli from the 17th century. The performance runs approximately 2.5 hours including an interval.

La Doriclea: Inter-Acts is part of the opera cycle Censored. The second work in the cycle, Orpheus in UNDERWORLD, will be performed on 18-19 September 2026 in Pannuhallen at the Dance House.
