Jazz Jkl Live: Mikko Pettinen Why Not

Trumpeter Mikko Pettinen leads the Why Not ensemble, blending modern jazz, electronic textures, and powerful emotional expression. The music draws inspiration from Pettinen's experience with a rare neurological condition - superficial hemosiderosis - and the threat of hearing loss.

The quartet released their second album "Patient Patient" last autumn. Led by trumpet and baritone saxophone, the ensemble moves through lyrical contemporary jazz where acoustic and electronic expression meet: free improvisation, ambient soundscapes, memorable melodies, and experimental sonic worlds. Pettinen's and saxophonist Joakim Berghäll's secondary instruments deepen the band's sound further.

Pettinen has played regularly in the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra's trumpet section since 1998 and appears on dozens of albums - from Anssi Kela to Paleface, from Redrama to Kerkko Koskinen Collective. Beyond Why Not, his active ensembles include Funky Finns and Helsinki-Cotonou Ensemble.
