Reading Circle 'Palestinians and Israel - What Is It About?'

The reading circle meets three times in Kallio Library's accessible group room Otso (1st floor). The aim is to deepen understanding of the history and reality of the Middle East conflict through both fiction and non-fiction. The opening of archival sources has brought new knowledge about the founding of the state of Israel based on early 20th-century documents.

At each meeting, one or two books are discussed and other relevant works are presented. Each session lasts 1-1.5 hours. The circle is led by Päivi Takala (TaT) and Tuula Haavisto (YTM).

Mon 5.10. at 18:00: Susan Abulhawa's "Mornings in Jenin" (2010/2015). You can also read the same author's "The Blue Between Sky and Water" (2015) or "Against a Loveless World" (2022). Also featured are works by Amos Oz and David Grossman.

Mon 2.11. at 18:00: Rashid Khalidi: "Palestine: One Hundred Years of Settler Colonialism and Resistance 1917-2017" (2024) and/or Hannu Juusola's "History of Israel" (new edition 2024). Also presented are Timo R. Stewart's "Palestine and Israel: History in Maps" (2025) and Susanne Dahlgren & Mikko Lohikoski's "Changing Middle East as the World Order Breaks" (2025).

Mon 7.12. at 18:00: Timo R. Stewart: "The Enchantment of the Promised Land: Israel's Christian Friends in Finland" (2022). Also discussed are Terhi Törmälehto's work "They Are Salt and Light" and Irene Zidan's "My Father from the Land of Orange Blossoms" (2024).
