Rita Vargas, La Matière du Silence

La Matière du Silence is Rita Vargas' exhibition at Galleria Becker in Jyväskylä. The title came to the artist in French - she could not find a suitable English or Finnish equivalent, despite trying. The exhibition brings together what her 17 years in Finland have created for her.

Vargas is a visual artist and PhD in art history who works with sculpture, installation, printmaking, and photography. Her art explores migration and identity shaped by diaspora through material metaphors and layered imagery. Drawing from classical iconography, she combines wood carvings, photographic fragments, ceramics, and cork to build symbolic spaces where personal and collective histories meet. Portuguese, shaped by Japanese influences and long resident in Finland, Vargas uses theatricality and fragmentation as forms of survival and transformation.
