At the Boundary Between Craft and Art Part 1: Art, Design and Craft

Master of Arts Outi Martikainen discusses weaving as a distinctive form of artistic expression - the lecture is an account of working within art, design and craft contexts. Professor (emerita) Ana Nuutinen examines how craft, art and design can function as critical practices that open alternative perspectives on consumption and production.

The talks are part of the lecture series "At the Boundary Between Craft and Art", which explores definitions of textile craft and textile art, and their justification from the perspectives of creators, valuation and livelihood. How do art craft, craft art, applied art and art textiles differ from each other? Is textile art only when hung on a wall? What role do craft skills or art industry play in the small business sector? The lecture series is organized by the Textile Culture Association and the Helsinki Workers' Institute.

The lecture can be attended in person at the Institute building or watched via live stream on the Helsinki Workers' Institute YouTube channel - the remote link will be added to the page one week before the event.
