Cuban jazz pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba takes the Kirjurinluoto Arena stage with saxophonist Chris Potter, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Eric Harland for their "First Meeting" project.
Chris Potter (born January 1, 1971, Chicago) is an American jazz saxophonist, composer and multi-instrumentalist based in New York. He rose to prominence in the early 1990s as a sideman with Red Rodney, then spent formative years with Paul Motian, Dave Holland and Dave Douglas before building a prolific solo career spanning more than 20 albums as a leader. Down Beat has called him "one of the most studied (and copied) saxophonists on the planet," and he remains the youngest musician ever to win Denmark's Jazzpar Prize.
Potter released Alive With Ghosts Today (Edition Records, May 8, 2026), a concept suite inspired by abolitionist John Brown, featuring Bill Frisell, Nate Smith and Burniss Travis.
All About Jazz reviewed the album's lead track 'Osawatomie Brown', praising the record for combining intense playing, compelling writing and sophisticated orchestration.
Potter appeared as a sideman on First Meeting (Live at Dizzy's Club), a live album led by pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba with Larry Grenadier and Eric Harland, released on 5Passion Records.
Potter received a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Instrumental Album for his featured role on John Patitucci's Spirit Fall (2025).
Potter performed with the WDR Big Band at the Kölner Philharmonie in Cologne, with arrangements by Mike Holober showcasing his compositions in a large-ensemble setting.
