Jason Moran is an American jazz pianist, composer and interdisciplinary artist born in Houston, Texas in 1975, widely regarded as one of the most restless creative forces in contemporary jazz. He has recorded for Blue Note Records since 1999 and leads the trio The Bandwagon with bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits. Rolling Stone dubbed him "the most provocative thinker in current jazz"; he received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2010 and served as Artistic Director for Jazz at the Kennedy Center from 2011 to 2025. His work reaches well beyond the piano bench - into film scores, museum installations and multimedia performance.
NPR's Fresh Air featured Moran's solo Ellington album, with jazz critic Martin Johnson praising it as one of the best current examples of building on Ellington's legacy.
Moran curated the 2026 Burlington Discover Jazz Festival, centering the programme on youth musicians and staging a Bandwagon set at a waterfront skatepark.
