Fred Hersch (born October 21, 1955, Cincinnati, Ohio) is an American jazz pianist, composer and educator with over 60 albums to his name as leader or co-leader, and 17 Grammy nominations spanning more than three decades. He was the first artist to perform week-long solo piano residencies at New York's Village Vanguard, and his influence on younger pianists - among them Brad Mehldau and Ethan Iverson - is widely acknowledged. His 2017 memoir Good Things Happen Slowly, which recounts his life in music and his experience as the first openly gay, HIV-positive jazz musician to go public, was named one of the year's five best memoirs by both The Washington Post and The New York Times.
