Cuban jazz pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba takes the Kirjurinluoto Arena stage with saxophonist Chris Potter, bassist Larry Grenadier, and drummer Eric Harland for their "First Meeting" project.
Gonzalo Rubalcaba (born May 27, 1963, Havana) is a Cuban jazz pianist and composer who comes from three generations of musicians - his grandfather Jacobo wrote classic danzones and his father Guillermo led his own orchestra. Discovered by Dizzy Gillespie in 1985, he went on to win three Grammy Awards and four Latin Grammys, and in 1999 Piano & Keyboard Magazine ranked him among the great pianists of the 20th century alongside Glenn Gould and Bill Evans. He has recorded extensively for Blue Note and his own 5Passion Records label, and since 2015 has taught at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music.
Rubalcaba released 'First Meeting: Live at Dizzy's Club' (5Passion Records) on July 11, 2025, a live quartet album recorded in August 2022 with saxophonist Chris Potter, bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Eric Harland.
Rubalcaba released 'Gonzalo Plays Pino' in 2025, a Latin jazz tribute to iconic Neapolitan singer-songwriter Pino Daniele.
He released 'A Tribute to Benny Moré and Nat King Cole' in 2025, a collaborative album with Yainer Horta and Joey Calveiro.
Rubalcaba released 'Collab' (Sony Music Brazil, 2024), a duo album with Brazilian mandolinist Hamilton de Holanda, which received a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Latin Jazz Album.
In 2024, Rubalcaba and saxophonist Pierrick Pédron received the Grand Prix de l'Académie du Jazz for their album 'Pédron Rubalcaba' as Album of the Year 2023.
