I, Elizabeth - an Absolute Monarch in Crisis

Elina Mustonen's performance is based largely on Elizabeth I's own texts and documents and moves between theatrical presentation and classical concert form. The script was written by Nely Keinänen, translated by Kersti Juva and directed by Laura Jäntti. The scenography is by Tarja Simone.

At the heart of the performance is Elizabeth I's forced signing of the death sentence for her cousin Mary Stuart - a crisis that is simultaneously personal, political and religious. Elizabeth was known as a gifted musician, and in the performance she attempts to resolve her inner conflict through music: how can one be a sensitive and loving person and still be a decisive leader?
