The Nether

A successful businessman named Sims has built a virtual world called "The Hideaway" in the Nether - the internet of the future. Criminal investigator Morris suspects him of serious crimes, triggering a drama that moves between two realities and blends elements of thriller, detective fiction, and science fiction.

The play explores the impact of technology and virtual reality on humanity and raises ethical questions: what constitutes a crime, can a crime go unpunished, and when might it be justified? The play's themes may be challenging for sensitive viewers. The production is not recommended for those under 16 years old.

The Nether is an award-winning play from 2012 by American playwright Jennifer Haley. Jyväskylä's Huoneteatteri production is the second in Finland - the play was previously staged at Tampere's Workers' Theatre. The premiere at Huoneteatteri takes place on 12.9.2026.
