Docent Ville Kivimäki: Finnish Society at War - What Can We Learn from 1939-1945?

The Second World War is often remembered through individual battles, soldiers, and weapons. Yet waging war required the mobilization of an entire society - administrative, economic, social policy, and citizenship-related questions often fade behind dramatic accounts of combat, even though these are precisely the issues that need broader discussion today.

Ville Kivimäki is research director at the Finnish Literature Society and specializes in the social and cultural history of the Second World War. He also leads a research center at the Finnish Academy for humanistic nationalism studies.

The lecture is held in the Heikki event hall of Lappeenranta's main library Parv, Valtakatu 47, 53100 Lappeenranta. Admission is free.

The lecture is part of the Kotkaniemi Museum's "Independent Finland" lecture series. Note: lectures are not held at Kotkaniemi, but at separately announced venues in both Lappeenranta and Luumäki.
