Dr Virpi Kaisto: Finland's Eastern Border in Imagination and Everyday Life

The lecture examines what Finland's eastern border has meant to people living in border regions and how it has shaped their lives. The impact of state border policy on the development of eastern border regions is also discussed. The focus is on recent decades and the period following the start of the war in Ukraine.

Virpi Kaisto is a human geographer and researcher at the Karelian Research Institute of the University of Eastern Finland. She has studied the development and everyday life in the border area between Finland and Russia from the early 2000s to the present day. She continues this research in the Bordersensitive project funded by the Academy of Finland.

The lecture is held at Luumäki municipal building, council chamber 2nd floor, Linnalantie 33, 54500 Taavetti. Free admission.

The lecture is part of the Kotkaniemi Museum's lecture series "Independent Finland". Note! The lectures are not held at Kotkaniemi, but at separately announced locations in Lappeenranta and Luumäki.
